History - History of the Senior Resource Guide and Compass.

The Senior Resource Guide & Compass is a grass-roots, consumer-based, local publication that has been serving older adults, their families and caregivers for over 25 years. It has grown in response to the comments, and suggestions received from individuals, organizations and service providers in the communities we serve.

Mission: The Senior Resource Guide & Compss seeks to meet people
at the point of their need with detailed, up-to-date contact information that helps to promote quality decision-making for older adults, their families, caregivers, service providers and caring professionals in northern Michigan and the UP.


1980 First produced by Grand Traverse/Leelanau Community Mental Health for Grand Traverse County and called the Elderly Resource Guide.

1984 Elderly Resource Guide expands to include Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties.

1989 CMH again produces the Elderly Resource Guide in cooperation with Building Ties Committee.

1993 CMH produces Elderly Resource Guide for the fourth time with the assistance of Building Ties Committee.

1997 Elderly Resource Guide becomes THE GUIDE. Great Lakes CMH produces in cooperation with Bay Area Older Adults Partnership. Funded in part by a federal block grant from Michigan Department of Community Health.

1998 Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation's Campbell Fund provides grant support for expansion of The Guide in the greater northwestern 5 county region. The Compass, an original navigational self-assessment tool, is also added. Munson Heathcare and the Grand Traverse Pavilions become the first advertising co-sponsors. The name now changes to The Senior Resource Guide & Compass.

2000 The Senior Resource Guide & Compass is produced entirely through independent sponsorships & represents a unique partnership of both public and private sectors working to help older adults and caregivers on a regional level. The Campbell Fund Committee underwrites first-time Home Delivery in rural areas throughout the region. Ameritech/SBC funds first copies of Guide & Compass on cd.

2001 An additional reprint of the Guide & Compass produced to meet added consumer and agency demand. Catholic Human Services is awarded a Long Term Care Innovations Grant from the Michigan Department of Community Health to replicate the Senior Resource Guide & Compass project across the 21 counties of northern, lower Michigan.

2004 Guide & Compass expands to include 3 Regions covering the 21 counties of northern lower Michigan with the assistance of Region 9 Area Agency on Aging, Alpena General Hospital, Cheboygan Memorial Hospital, Otsego Memorial Hospital, Northern Michigan Hospital, Munson Healthcare, St. Joseph's Hospital and in cooperation with Advocates for Charlevoix- Emmet Seniors (ACES), the Otsego County Superboard, Bay Area Senior Advocates (BASA) and Commissions and Councils on Aging through out northern Michigan.

2005 Senior Resource Guide & Compass launches the online version f the printed publication hosted on the Record Eagle's Live Home Page. The website also provides a portal for local, regional, state and national senior information links. Copies of the printed Guide is available on request.
